Small holder farmers affected by the 2021 flooding will benefit from agricultural and livestock inputs donated by FAO to the Ministry of Agriculture.
On Tuesday, 18 January, 2022 the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) officially handed over the first set of agricultural and livestock inputs to the the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) under its Emergency Response and Early Recovery Support to Smallholder Farmers Affected by the 2021 Floods in Guyana and Suriname project.
Over 1000 hand tools, 200 100g packs of assorted seeds, and 200 80kg bags of assorted fertilisers were provided for distribution by the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) to 200 crop farmers in Regions 2,3,4,5,6,10.
Also, a number of livestock medication for distribution to 200 livestock farmers who rear cattle, swine and poultry also in Regions 2,3, 4,5,6,10 were provided and will be distributed by the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA).
Together, the total value of these inputs for this 1st phase of distribution is USD 42,714 (G8, 888, 775) and for the entire project life, FAO has budgeted a total of U$136,000 for similar support.
FAO and partners - NAREI and GLDA- are working towards:
- Strengthening the capacity for smallholder farmers and institutions in the areas of agriculture disaster risk management, flood recovery and response and;
- Provide agricultural and livestock inputs to over 1000 farmers in a two phased approach to help with the recovery and rebuilding of small holder farmers in six Regions of Guyana.
